Make Montessori Sandpaper Letters {FREE Printable!}

Montessori sandpaper letters are used to introduce children to the letters of the alphabet. Here’s an awesome DIY to help your child learn their letters through their senses. Sandpaper letters encourage children to learn their letters for both reading and writing through touch, sight and sound. Using the Montessori sandpaper letters children will HEAR the sound (through your introduction). SEE the letter and FEEL the letter by tracing on it with their finger.

Sandpaper letters are very easy to make, require simple materials and a little bit of your time.

Montessori Sandpaper Letters

{you will need…}

Fine grade sandpaper.

Balsa wood slats, cardboard or heavy cardstock

Blue and red paint

Reversed sandpaper letter templates (see links below)

Scissors

Glue

Green and red dot stickers

{what you do…}

1. Select the material your letters are going to be attached to. I used rectangular pieces of balsa wood I found at Bunnings already cut to the perfect size, but you could use cardboard, foam sheets or heavy cardstock.

2. I chose to paint my wood using blue for consonants and red for vowels (this was how I was trained, but I have seen the opposite done).

3. Print out the templates. I have created these free downloadable templates for you. I have reversed the letters, so all you need to do is print them off and glue them onto the back of fine or extra fine sandpaper! And I have managed to fit the entire alphabet on two sheets of A4 paper. (You’re welcome!)
